What is This Medication
ABSTRACT
Chemical Compounds, being the alkyl sulfate of sulfated saccharides, particularly, dextrin and cyclodextrin, and pharmaceutical compositions containing these compounds. The compounds of the invention provide antiviral activity, particularly in the treatment and prevention of sexually-transmitted diseases. Methods of treating viral infection and preventing viral transmission include administration of the compounds of the invention orally, topically, subcutaneously, by muscular injection, by intraperitoneal injection and by intravenous injection.
INTRODUCTION
Compound #11039 is the first polymethysulfonated polysulfonated dextrin to be introduced into a clinical study as a topical microbicide for the prevention of HIV infection spread by vaginal or anal intercourse in endemic areas. The HIV preventive Trial Network report outlines this need. Compound #11039 is believed to inhibit the binding to either variable or conserved binding sites of the HIV particle or cellular receptors, thus preventing infection. However the exact mechanism of action will require further study.
CHEMISTRY, MANUFACTURING AND CONTROLS
Compound #11039 is a new chemical entity resulting from the reaction of sulfonating and methylsulfonating reagents on corn starch. The starting material, dextrin, is a food product. The current established protocol for the manufacture and controls of Compound # 11039 is attached.
PHARMACOLOGY / TOXICOLOGY
Compound # 11039 is a solid non-toxic white powder at room temperature. An
initial oral study in rodents has demonstrated Compound #11039 to be non-toxic.
In rodents the LD50 by LP. route is approximately 57 mg/Kg.
