What is a Microbicide
A microbicide is a product, such as a gel or a cream, that could be applied
topically to genital mucosal surfaces to prevent or significantly reduce the
transmission of HIV and other disease-causing organisms during sexual
intercourse.
Several different mechanisms for microbicides are being studied. An effective microbicide may be able to kill or otherwise immobilize HIV; it may form a barrier between the virus and the vaginal tissue; it could boost the natural defenses of the vagina against HIV; or it could prevent the virus from replicating once it enters cells.
